Ban on Cell Phone Use in School Upheld in Mock Trial

A group of CLCS high school students had their day in court recently when Judge Dan Greear welcomed them into his courtroom to participate in a mock trial organized by Mrs. Sylvia. The students were assigned roles in advance to prepare for the day’s proceedings. In the case of Riverdale High school (Private School)/Board of Education vs Parents/Students, the subject in question was Cell Phones Permitted vs Prohibited in Classrooms (banned cell phones).

Chloe Beakes and Savannah Clay represented the plaintiffs, while Johniece Sylvia and Isaiah McFarland represented the defendants. Mr. Koster, Mrs. Witmer, and Mrs. Dietz made special appearances as employees of Riverdale High School.  A colorfully-clad Elijah Kiser as Archie (Scooby Doo) Andrews was a convincing final witness. Following a tough morning of introducing evidence and intense cross examination, members of the jury found that Riverdale High School was not in violation of any law and the ban on cell phone use would be upheld.

Judge Greear advised the participants on what would and would not be allowed in a real court of law and allowed them to ask questions while the jury deliberated. Judge Greear had a few light-hearted questions of his own for Mr. Koster and Mrs. Witmer while they were on the stand, since both of them had his son, Ben, in class when he attended CLCS.

Thanks to Judge Greear for presiding over the trial and for making his courtroom available.  Also, thanks to Judge Greear’s team for making this experience possible.
